The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) is a professional membership organization founded in 1970 to promote, advance, and educate its members and the medical community in the science of diagnostic medical sonography. The SDMS, with over 28,000 members, is the largest association of sonographers and sonography students in the world.
If you are a sonographer, educator, healthcare professional, or commercial representative who has obtained one or more credentials from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), you are eligible to be an Active SDMS Member. In addition to great benefits, you can help guide the future of sonography by voting in SDMS elections and by participating as an SDMS leader.
If you have not obtained one credential from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), but are a healthcare provider primarily involved in the practice of sonography, sonography education, clinical management, or commercial activities, you are eligible for this membership category. You are entitled to all the benefits of membership except the right to hold office or be elevated to Fellow status. And, if in the future, you decide to become a certified sonographer, the SDMS provides the professional support to assist you in your career goals.
SDMS Corporate/Business/Institution (CBI) membership is available to commercial firms or businesses involved in the manufacture and sale of ultrasound equipment, accessories, pharmaceuticals, and/or accessories, or formal publications related to sonography, or an institution involved in sonography-related education and training.
SDMS CBI membership links you to the largest sonography organization in the world currently representing more than 27,000 sonographers and all sonography specialty areas. Your membership gives you access to information, professional education, government affairs advocacy, and access to your target audience in the sonography community.
The SDMS Fellow membership category recognizes individual members who have made outstanding contributions to the field of sonography and to the SDMS. An SDMS Fellow exhibits professional qualities and attributes by contributing to the advancement of sonography and sustained contribution to the SDMS. A call for nominations is made to the SDMS membership each year for this award.
Students are the future of sonography. SDMS student members pay discounted dues and still receive all the benefits of membership except the right to vote and hold office. The SDMS encourages and empowers students to become active individuals in the sonography profession.
To qualify for this membership category, you must be enrolled in a diagnostic medical sonography program. Your program director or clinical coordinator must complete the affirmation contained within the SDMS Student Membership Application.
Additionally, there is a special “interim” membership renewal rate to help ease the burden that students may experience as they make the transition from student to working sonographer. This special renewal rate is applied to the membership year immediately following the student’s graduation.
Do you participate professionally in the field of diagnostic medical sonography and support the mission of the Society? If you have not obtained a sonography credential from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and are not a practicing diagnostic medical sonographer, then you qualify for this membership category. As a Supporting Member, you receive all the benefits of membership except the right to vote or hold office.
