JRC-DMS Sponsored Event
Sonography Programs Need Great Clinical Instructors

Thursday, September 26, 2024 | 1:30 pm–3:30 pm

Location: Bolden 6

Audience: DMS Program Personnel and Administrators

Description: The clinical instructor (CI) plays a critical role in the education of a sonography student. It is the CI who ensures the student is provided with the supervision and experiences to facilitate the application of theory and simulation to the patient care setting. The CI is charged with the responsibility of evaluating the skills needed to be an entry-level sonographer. Sonography programs and students, employers, and patients rely heavily on the CI. While the CI is an expert in the clinical setting, they often lack formal training as an educator. This presentation will explore some of the skills and qualities needed by a quality CI.

Following Dr. Michael’s 30-minute presentation, the JRC-DMS will hold a 90-minute Question-and-Answer pod-style session on areas including but not limited to:

  • CAAHEP DMS Standards and JRC-DMS Policies & Procedures
  • Clinical Competencies
  • JRC-DMS Online Accreditation Portal
  • JRC-DMS Accreditation Process

Attendees must be registered for SDMS conference to attend the event.

Please note that access to audio-visual services will not be available during Dr. Michael’s presentation and the JRC-DMS question and answer session. Therefore, the following will not be provided:

  • Virtual option
  • Recording of the session
  • Any note taking by the JRC-DMS

Objectives:

  • List skills needed to be an effective CI.
  • Describe CI qualities that promote student learning in the clinical setting.
  • Explore resources available to standardize CI training.

Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JDMS)

Friday, September 27, 2024 | 7:00 am–7:50 am

Location: Strand 11

Audience: Open to all SDMS Annual Conference attendees

Description: This session will focus on practical ways to assist novice scientific writers to become published authors with the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JDMS). A presentation from the Editor-in-Chief will cultivate participants’ skill acquisition that may be needed for all manuscript types, accepted for publication. Focusing on both innate and acquired writing skills for attendees is directly related to raising the quality of author submissions. This session will also underscore some of these same skill sets, as they are applied to being a peer-reviewer for the JDMS. The combination of experiences works to improve writing and editing for those volunteering with JDMS. The information on becoming a published author and a responsible peer-reviewer have many commonalities. Participants will be provided with opportunities for further peer mentorship and invited to ask questions.

Objectives:
  • Describe the process of effective scientific writing, with a goal of being published in the JDMS.
  • Discuss the various types of manuscript options such as original research, literature reviews, case studies/series, and symposia.
  • Identify opportunities to become a skilled peer-reviewer and provide useful feedback to authors.
