Advanced Sonography

The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) has long supported efforts to create advanced sonographer career opportunities. 

An Advanced Sonographer is a mid-level provider. As part of an interdisciplinary team, the Advanced Sonographer provides advanced level sonography services based ​on clinical competency obtained through advanced education and clinical experience. The Advanced Sonographer works under the authority of a supervising physician. Note that the Advanced Sonographer has also been referred to as an Ultrasound Practitioner, Advanced Practice Sonographer, and Clinical Sonography Specialist. 

Advanced Sonographer Credentials

Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) - The ACS credential provides a career track for sonographers who practice at an advanced level in an echocardiography laboratory. The ACS  is committed to improving lab quality and efficiency through preparing preliminary echo assessments, performing advanced echocardiograms, mentoring fellows, students, residents, and staff, developing and implementing educational plans, facilitating continuous quality improvement, and coordinating cardiac sonography research.
