ARDMS - The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography tests the competency of sonographers.
ARRT - The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists tests the competency of sonographers (as well as radiologic technologists).
CCI - Cardiovascular Credentialing International tests the competency of sonographers and vascular technologists.
Certification Exam - A comprehensive and statistically valid method for testing the knowledge and competency of sonographers. Applicants who meet all eligibility requirements and successfully complete one or more certification examination are certified in a specialty area and receive a sonography credential.
Certification/Credentialing Organization - An NCCA- or ISO-accredited organization that administers sonographer certification examinations and awards credentials to those who meet the certification/credentialing organization's requirements.
Credentials - Awarded to sonographers to indicate that they have passed sonography certification exams and met all requirements established by a certification/credentialing organization. Sonography credentials include RDMS, RDCS, RVT, ARRT(S), ARRT(BS), ARRT(BS), RCS, ACS, RCCS, RCIS, RCS, and RPhS.
NCCA - The National Commission for Certifying Agencies sets standards for organizations that offer certification exams.
SDMS - The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography is the largest sonographer membership organization in the world. The SDMS provides education, information, and representation for sonographers.
Sonogram - A diagnostic medical test, ordered by a physician or other authorized healthcare provider, which uses ultrasound to generate medical images. Also known as an Ultrasound, Ultrasound Exam, Ultrasound Study.
