Welcome to the official web site for the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) whose purpose is to "promote, advance, and educate its members and the medical community in the science of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and as a consequence, contribute to the enhancement of patient care." The purpose of this website is to provide information for sonographers - those professionals who perform medical examinations with ultrasound.
Much of the information provided on this site is intended for SDMS members only. Access to this information is provided as a benefit of membership in the Society. Attempts to circumvent our security and/or unauthorized access to this restricted information or our computer systems will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
How We Protect Your Information
We employ the latest encryption and security technology and fraud detection techniques in all areas where you provide us with personal or account information. This is done to protect you from unauthorized use of the information you are sending to our servers. We take security very seriously. Secure areas such as online ordering, member contact information, etc. use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption to protect the information being displayed and submitted via a web browser.
If you are using an SSL-compliant browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, you will be able to conduct secure transactions. To make sure you have the latest security features in your web browser, please be sure you have installed the latest version of your favorite browser, Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator. In addition, we recommend you verify that you have installed all necessary updates/fixes to your computer's operating system (such as Windows 98/2000/XP Critical Updates or Windows NT service packs/hotfixes).
We are constantly monitoring our online resources to help prevent the spread of viruses. However, we recommend you always have anti-virus software installed on your computer and ensure it is always up-to-date (your software's virus definition files should be updated at least monthly). Certain computer viruses can capture personal information and/or cause considerable damage to your computer's configuration.
What Information Do We Collect and How Do We Use It?
When you visit the SDMS web site, our servers automatically recognize your Internet Protocol address (IP address) or domain name. Often times this number is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and automatically changes each time you dial your ISP so it does not directly identify you.
In order to enhance our web site, we may track how our visitors are using the web site. Specific information such as name, SDMS Member number, and email address, is not included in this analysis. Unless you provide it, we do not collect or know your name or email address. We do not follow your browsing path outside of our web site.
Like many web sites, our web site sometimes uses "cookies" - small files placed temporarily in your web browser - to keep track of your stay at our site and to personalize the information provided. The text in a cookie, by itself, only tells us that you have visited our site before. A cookie generated by our servers contains no information about you. It contains only an alphanumeric ID that, for example, lets you continue shopping where you left off with your last visit without losing any of the items in your list.
If you share a computer with someone else (e.g., at work), you should be careful about saving your logon information using cookies. While storing your logon information in a cookie may speed your access to the Members Only resources on our web site, you could also be providing the other users with access using your member number. Your member number is your key to SDMS benefits and services...it should not be shared with others.

We do not share email addresses collected from our membership so providing us with your email address simply helps us deliver your membership services and benefits and will not result in your receiving unsolicited commercial email from any party. In certain cases, however, your email address may be used by SDMS or our partners to deliver member benefits you have specifically requested. For example, if you access a member benefit such as a CME program hosted on a partner's web site, we may pass your name, email address, and SDMS/ARDMS number to the partner's web site solely so they can log your participation and deliver a CME certificate via email.
Note that use of the SDMS Discussion Forums may expose your email address to outside parties and is beyond our control.
When you join or renew SDMS membership, place an order, sign up for an email list, or participate in a promotion or contest, we ask you to provide information which MAY include your name, mailing address, email address, telephone number, ARDMS number, date of birth, social security number, or credit card number. Except to verify credit card information to complete your order, we do not use or release any credit card or financial information for any purpose. A member's date of birth and social security number are used for identity verification and continuing education tracking. This information will not be released for any purpose.
Continuing Medical Education Records
When you complete continuing medical education (CME) through the SDMS, we maintain this information and may provide verification of completion to credentialing organizations (such as ARDMS) through our SDMS CME Tracker program. An SDMS member may view their CME records in the Members Only area of the SDMS website. This information will not be released for any other purpose.
All SDMS members receive certain benefits including newsletters, journal, etc. If members provide us with a mailing address, they may also periodically receive mail (not email) from other reputable companies that offer products and services that may be of interest. SDMS requires all companies with whom we share our mailing list to submit the contents of the mailing for prior approval.
