We all wear multiple hats and juggle often-competing priorities. Work, required continuing medical education, school activities,, hungry family members, and doctor appointments for elderly parents all compete for your time. Many times, it is tempting, if not just easier, to put everyone else’s needs above yours.
As a member of the healthcare team, you know that February is American Heart Health month and you are well aware of the statistics on heart disease and stroke. While heart health is very important, I would like to take it one-step further and encourage you to take a closer look at every aspect of your health. You have to take care of yourself so that you can take care of your loved ones and patients.
Everyone’s version of taking care of themselves will look different. Maybe you need to increase your exercise, maybe you need to rediscover an old hobby or learn a new one, or maybe you need to practice better ergonomics when you are scanning. The reality is that no one is going to give you time to take care of yourself, it is up to you to make the time.
In 2017, I encourage you to put your health and well-being first. Do something that you enjoy every day. Make and nurture connections, take time to laugh and enjoy the little things in life. Eat right and stay mentally and physically healthy.
Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It is a necessity. If you are exhausted and burned out, how can you take care of those who are depending on you?
Here’s to good health in 2017.
